Day Nine - Mount Macedon

29/5/2016

Free accommodation with some locals last night, it's always nice to be able to combine travelling with calling in on friends.

Despite the cold weather, we added one more to our party and headed west out of Melbourne up to the town of Mount Macedon which is renowned for its beautiful gardens. We decided to visit Forest Glade Gardens and spent a couple of hours wandering around the six hectare grounds, on paths lined with flower beds, stunning antique sculptures and through a lovely fern gully. Despite nearly freezing we still managed to enjoy ourselves because of the beautiful setting.

Fern Glade
Memorial Cross

Around lunch time we headed up to the summit of Mount Macedon itself, and after a picnic lunch in the car to escape the cold, we walked out to the twenty-one metre high Memorial Cross, which commemorates those who gave their lives in WWI. The original cross was erected in 1935, but due to storm and fire damage was replaced in 1995. The summit of Mount Macedon is 1,001m and gave us greats views of the surrounding plains and Melbourne.

Unable to handle the freezing temperatures anymore, we headed back into the city for some shopping, and then went out for dinner at a Chinese restaurant in Footscray. Heading home tomorrow.
